1. Sooo, the full Sonia The Cruel was in Indie Gala 3, right?

P: No, it was misinformation ;) . Indie Gala 3, thanks to the awesome idea of its owners included prologue to the series. So what you see in Indie Gala 3 is only a prologue – the first few pages of the comic. The full series, and the full issues that we plan on selling will be much longer. Continue reading

About Sonia

Hello! I would like to present you our newest work. Our most important work. After years of drawing smaller projects, one-shots, writing literary works and making graphic art, we have decided to create something bigger. Something more important. Something we would like to publish.

It seems that all manners of things depend on relative perception. It might be that we come as madmen, who only waste your time. It might be that we should consider changing our profession and stop working on comic books. It might be that our search for a new publisher is but a futile and naive dream. Or it might be that our comic book turns out to be an important event. We do not know. Time, reception, writing, language, deeds – all of that is relative, changeable, inconstant. Same as Sonia, our heroine. Our sinister Sonia the Cruel. What are her adventures and what are they not?

Most of all Sonia is not a comic book about vengeance. It is not a comic book about knights and thieves, to whom the heroine shows her intimate charms and a proper example. It is also not a European answer to Japanese shōnen manga – although buckets of blood are being spilt there. Still, it is our own contribution to the form of media that we love – a collection of our experiences with graphic art and writing, inspired by European, American and Japanese artists.

We cannot hide the fact, that our main sources of inspiration were Robert Howard’s The Shadow of the Vulture, James O’Barr’s The Crow, pulp comics and novels. Not to mention Karl Edward Wagner, Kentarō Miura or Buronson. We need not hide with this kind of inspiration, for we consider all of these as astounding works, which had an impact on our lives. Works, which we frequently discuss about, and which we love tremendously. We love writing and drawing, and we would like to fulfill these passions.

As you can see, our comic book is not one directed to children, but rather to adults – fans of such works as The Crow, Berserk, or Thorgal. Without a doubt  Sonia the Cruel was created as a tribute to the genre of sword & sorcery, although an atypical one. The heroine, though a beautiful woman, does not expose herself as females in sword & sorcery usually do. The villain, though a tyrant, is somewhat justified by the greater perspective, which his manner of politicking brings. And Sonia’s insanity, just as Eric’s in The Crow, provokes fear in others. In those, who do not understand her.

There is no good and evil. There is only choice. Choice that depends on one’s morality and standing. They can be easy, they can be difficult. The easy ones usually have a small-ranged effect. But the more complicated ones can change the face of the world. Sonia is a comic book about choice and moral relativism, but at the same time it is not overly philosophical. At least we do not want it to be. But we would love to get published, or to stay independent. Unfortunetly we need cash to finish Sonia.

We cite certain poems where we thought they would express the story far more greatly than we could – by drawing out inspiration from authors from all over the globe, we want to create something brand new. Something different, but at the same time – European in nature. We do believe that Sonia has potential not necessarily as a niche, silent hit, but as a mainstream comic book. The samples show various forms of narration and art styles – we sincerely hope that it is all to your liking. Moreover, we hope that finally we may be able to realize Sonia. Sonia the Cruel, the one Sonia into whom we’ve invested our time, our souls, and our money.

Sonia as a whole will encompass many more pages than we have at present, but which we do not have finished yet. We wish to create, but to do so we need some time. First issue will have about 30 pages long. The prologue (or rather first chapter) will be included in Indie Gala. Even though, as Sonia herself shows, death and destruction, as terrible as they are, have a certain aesthetic beauty to them, nothing else satisfies our instincts as does the act of creation. That is just how we view the world. After all, it seems that everything is relative.

Thank you for your attention.
